Bill West BS
WEZL Program Director, Bill West, a Chicago native and the youngest of six kids, has spent the last seventeen years in the Southeast.  Armed with a degree in Broadcast Journalism from Bradley University in Peoria, IL, he took his first “real job” in sunny Hilton Head Island, SC in 1989.  After five years there on several stations with different formats, and three years in Savannah, GA, the better part of those eight years as a morning show host/co-host, the radio bug took him to Columbia, SC  initially with a country format.  Two years later, Bill returned to Savannah, GA where he was the Program Director and Mid-Day Host for six years on  WJCL.  Then... three years and counting at The Bull in Augusta.  Now he’s moved back to the Low Country  to take the challenge of “The Weasel”.  Married thirteen years to MJ, they have a home in Mt. Pleasant and have one son, Jack, who is seven years old.

CASH Your Vote

There is a lot of election talk these days.  Lately John Rick (who is campaining for McCain with a new song "Rasin' McCain") has come under fire from Johnny's Daughter Roseanne Cash.  She says its very preumptuous to say who her late father would support.

Hootie Homegrown
Sunday 08-17-2008 3:52pm ET

The State of South Carolina got another reminder of the impact of live Blowfish within the Low Country musical habitat.

Hootie and The Blowfish -Darius, Soni, Dean and Mark (with Peter Holsapple) held court at Daniel Island's Family Circle Stadium Friday and nealy sold the place out.  Although there were a bunch a seats that were blocked off due to the big stage (for such a relatively small floor) there were only a few vacant spots in the 95% capacity stadium.   Everyone was on there feet the whole night.   Interesting to note the crowd seemed a bit younger than the 30-ish group I had envisioned.  Looks like the night is becoming quite the Daniel Island social event.   It's a classy venue - especailly for a stadium.

It was a big party for the band that will be taking some time apart to launch a few solo projects.   Mark, Soni, and Darius all have projects in play and both Darius and Mark had a chance to show off some new material.

Both got great response.  In fact, when Darius kicked into the chorus of the new single "Don't Think I Dont Think About It" it was one of the first sing along moments of the night.  I mentioned it t him when I randomly saw him at the Springsteen show the next night.   Surprising since it's only been heard on radio for the most part.

At several points during the show it was not a stretch to categorize the band a "country."    Mandolins... some steel guitar... the hat...  and probably the best version of ou Never Even Call Me By My Name ever done.  (Updated lyrics "you don't have to call me Kenny Chesney!" really revved up the crowd).

The rest of the night was a fun mix of covers (the mini tribute to REM with "Losing My Religion" was a highlight) to the big hits (anyone who left early to beat traffic missed the closer "Only Wanna Be With You").

I'm sure Hootie isn't appreciated nealy as much anywhere else.. but it was nice to see people really into it all the way upto the top seats (and at this stadium that's WAY up there).

It was also nice to see the band get some accolades for all the charitable work for the schools.  FYE presented the band's Foundation with a check for $65,000 and the superintendant of the state board of Education reconized the group naming them "Palmetto Abassadors of Public Education".

The band now takes a break from touring and Darius is Set to release "Learn To Live" on September 23rd.
